How to Write a Thesis Statement: Claim and Reasons
Turn a topic into an arguable thesis statement with a claim and reasons, and learn what makes a thesis weak or strong, with two worked examples.
The formula
- Thesis = claim + because (reasons)
- Arguable, specific, and one sentence
If no one could disagree, it is a fact, not a thesis.
Example 1
Improve this: 'This essay is about The Odyssey.'
- That names a topic, not a claim
- Ask: what does the story show?
- Add a claim and reasons
In The Odyssey, Odysseus shows that perseverance matters more than strength because he survives through cleverness and loyalty to home.
Example 2
Improve this: 'Social media has good and bad points.'
- It is vague and takes no side
- Choose a position
- Name your reasons
Schools should limit phones in class because they distract students and reduce face-to-face discussion.
Common mistake
A thesis that announces ('In this essay I will…')
Make the claim directly.
Keep it specific enough to prove in a few paragraphs.
Revise it after you draft, if your evidence changes.
