These verbs take être. Most other verbs take avoir.
The rules
- avoir or être + past participle
- With être, the participle agrees with the subject
- With avoir, it usually stays the same
Elle est allée. Ils sont partis.
Example 1
Elle ___ (aller) au cinéma.
- Aller is on the être list
- The participle agrees with elle
Elle est allée au cinéma.
Example 2
Nous ___ (manger) une pizza.
- Manger is not on the list
- So it takes avoir
Nous avons mangé une pizza.
Common mistake
J'ai allé au cinéma
Aller takes être, not avoir.
Say: Je suis allé (or allée) au cinéma.
